Harold S. Campbell, entrepreneur, philanthropist, missionary and founder of the Westgate Mall. His journey through life was complex, impressive and distinct. He was born in Philadelphia, May 5, 1913. Shortly thereafter, his parents moved to a picturesque farm on the Tohickan Creek in Bucks County. It was here he learned how to fish and develop a deep love for the outdoors.

As a young boy, Harold prayed that he would be a successful contractor, lawyer or boxer. At age fifteen his family moved to Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. After much thought, he decided not to become a boxer or a lawyer and began working for a contractor in Bethlehem for $.30 an hour. In just two years he achieved full carpenter status. In 1929, the economic depression hit and Harold lost his job. A saver, he gave his money to his parents to help them keep their home. He recalls being down to his last 50-cent piece which he carried in his pocket for three months and continually prayed for the ability to work and fulfill his lifetime ambition. |
He believed he learned so much from the depression. He held many jobs, a Fuller Brush salesman, selling produce in Philadelphia and he started his own business of delivering milk. In 1939 he sold the business for $3,000. Harold then realized his DREAM when he entered the building business in 1937, finishing his first house and using all his savings to invest in this new venture.
By 1945 he had erected 80 homes in the City of Bethlehem which was a segue into his 1950 venture to develop homes in Westgate Hills.
In 1949, Harold desired to become a pilot. He soloed on September 23, 1949. He used his pilot’s license to serve the church. He traveled all over the country and even expanded his ministry to the Caribbean. His faith life led him to a strong believe in philanthropy.
Harold’s first gift ever was when he gave $480.00 to a local church for a heating system for their local Sunday school. He wanted the children to have a place to worship and he drove to Philadelphia to purchase the system and then realized his love for giving to others.
Harold died in 2004 leaving the Harold S. Campbell Foundation to create his legacy and to continue to provide children in the Lehigh Valley with an extraordinary exposure to the arts. In 2008 DREAM was born, DRAMA, READING, EDUCATION, ART AND MUSIC, the signature project of the foundation. Today, DREAM is alive in the Bethlehem School District, providing DREAM author days, DREAM Theater & Library Camps and DREAMAKERS a community road show.
